1. THE NUMBERING SYSTEMS USED
(i) The ID number at the start of the line indicates his order of descent from
the initial couple "0 0-George HALL" and "sp-Betsy COOKE".
(The "sp-" is for spouse.)
For example their 3rd child is given ID number "3":
3 1-Henry HALL (1851) who married sp-Laura Elizabeth RATHBONE (1857).
The 7th child of "3" Henry and spouse Laura is given ID "37":
37 2-Vera Elizabeth Rathbone HALL (1897-1971)
and so on.
(ii) The generation number precedes the name.
For example the "2-" in 37 2-Vera Elizabeth Rathbone HALL
indicates she is in the 3rd generation, counting the initial couple
"0-George HALL" and "sp-Betsy COOKE" as the 1st generation.
So to see who her siblings are one can either scan for adjacent "1-"
or scan for 11, 12, .... (In this case the siblings stop at 18. )
(iii) To make this descendancy chart look like a conventional family tree,
you need to put all the pages of the tree "2" together as one vertical sheet,
then turn it on its side with the left margin at the top. Now draw horizontal
lines between all siblings. The top line will join all the 2-.
The next line will join all the 2- but be broken so as not to cover any 2-.
So it is in 2 parts: the first is for 31 (one child so the horizontal line is
just a point), & the second joins 41, 42, ...,48.
The 3rd line joins all the 4- and breaks whenever a 2- or 3- occurs.
The 4th line joins all the 5- and breaks whenever a 2- or 3- or 4- occurs.
And so on.
(iv) The children 2- of Henry and Laura Hall have all passed away now.
The grandchildren of Henry & Laura Hall, marked 4--are cousins
(or siblings) to each other. Similarly if you are marked 5- (that is
5th generation from the initial couple) then you are a second cousin
(or closer) to the other 5-. If you are marked 6- then you are a
third cousin (or closer) to the other 6-. We now have 7 generations.

on p1 of photo album of Henry HALL [3] held by Geoff HALL [381]. This puts his
b year as 1819.
1847 daughter Betsy [1] b at Warwick -see 1851 census under wife.
1850 daughter Emma [2] b at Heaviley, Stockport, Cheshire.

1871 census: hatter 57 so b1814 in Denton, Lancs. See his wife for full entry.
1877 marriage certificate of his son Henry [3] lists George as a hatter of
Upperthorpe. (Henry's death certificate gives George as a barrister!!)
There is an Upperthorpe near Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire. But this one is
almost surely
"UPPER-THORPE, hamlet in the parish of Sheffield </A><pre>
and the township of Nether-Hallam; 1 mile from Sheffield." (West Riding)
- according to http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/yrksdict/
"A Topographical Dictionary of Yorkshire" 1822, by Thomas LANGDALE,
(also available at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mwi/e-riding.html)
It is now a district of Sheffield near Walkeley. (One says it is
very near to a town named Harthill, SEE of Sheffield; another says it is W of
Sheffield.) See "14. Links".
1881 census at 25 Dane St, Denton, Lancashire -see his wife for full entry.
So the family moved from Warwick to Stockport to Gorton, Manchester to Denton
to Sheffield then George & Elizabeth & son John moved back to Denton by 1881.
There are 13 Dentons listed by www.streetmap.co.uk Our one is NOT that in N
Yorkshire NW of Ilkley (of Ilkley Moor Ba Tat fame - Do you know the song?)
- see 6.2.1 re censuses, but is that in Greater Manchester (formerly Cheshire,
then Lancashire).

The first building on the even numbers
side after the river is the Wellington Mill but, according to the Royal Mail,
it does not have a number. Right next door to the mill is a small factory which
makes components for hearing aids. It rejoices in the unfortunate title of
Universal Aids. Their postal address is 8-14 Wellington Road South. Next door
we have the carpet shop, 16 Wellington Road South.
The map of Stockport dated 1872 shows a large square block next to Wellington
Mill labelled Daw Bank Mill, then Exchange Street, across Exchange Street is
shown a long narrow block which could have been houses. My guess is number 4
was one of these. Today, this site is occupied by the Post Sorting Office,
which look like a 1950s building. ... Wellington Road South is carried over
the river by means of a road bridge which is then continued, on the same level,
by a series of arches. The bus station is
accessed under these arches. Any buildings which once stood on this level would
be either on streets called Daw Bank or Chestergate. On the upper level
Wellington Road South continues on its arches until it reaches Wellington Mill,
an old cotton mill where our museum is now located. After that the numbering
resumes at number 16 which is now a carpet shop."

"Denton was one of the centres of the hatting trade. Felt hatting was
quite specialised and depended on a good "soft" water supply, so small
areas often became magnets for the hatting industry. As George was born
in Bristol, I would suggest you have a look around the Bitton-Oldland
Common area just to the west of Bristol as this was the chief hatting
area for Bristol. Quite a number of Bitton hatters moved to Denton
during the 19th Century, so it is possible he learned his trade there!

We sighted the 3 Kings at 4.25 - 18.10.1879. [Near Great Barrier Island]
a hurricane came on and blew us in the deep ocean again - 21.10.1879.
water is the colour and thickness of brown paint & is making some of passengers
ill. 4 of our crew are down with the skurvey... The only way you can [eat the
biscuits] is to soak them and they require soaking 4 to 6 hours. - 22.10.1879.
The country seems to be all round about us & is one of the most splendid
harbours & finest mountain scenery I have ever witnessed. - 24.10.1879.
Auckland from the wharf looks a scattered place & has the appearance of a newly
inhabited mountainous country, a few buildings here & there... There is no fire
grate at all in the houses... The way the people cook here is enough to puzzle
anyone. They use what they call camp ovens... The people in the colony are of
a very independent nature & will not look at you if you ask them a question.
They will give you a very shy answer. They are all sprung of a middle class and
are as stuck up as can be... if they know you are poor they will try & keep you
there.. There are 100s of people out of employment... You cannot tell the
difference between man & master - 25.10.1879.

The following info was found by Kay TRAYES at the Takapuna Library and Archives
in 2002.
1 Dominion Rd,Devonport (LEBU) is a beautiful large character villa with huge
old trees, on the corner of Dominion Rd (NOW Allenby Rd - Can someone check if
this is still No. 1?) as 1 Allenby Rd is not next door to 7 Derby St but across
the road from the house next door to 7 Derby St) and Derby St
and opposite a park; is newly-clad and painted and is the original home.
The records show the rates paid by Laura HALL.
These 2 photos of LEBU taken 2002 are from Kay.
One from the corner, the other from Dominion (now Allenby) Rd shows the gate
with a space where it seems once was a plaque "Lebu".
Kay told me in 2006 it is on the market for c$950,000.
7 Derby St, Devonport, next door on a more sloped section, where Vera and Rex
lived is a smaller attractive pioneer style villa with a long verandah facing
the road, only an off-road space for one car, and the original stained-glass
front door panel with the inscription - RIVELIN (not Riverlin) is named after
their home in Sheffield, which in turn was named after Rivelin Valley,
Sheffield!

Allenby Ave.
On the door the print is upper case with the R and N large, sloping to smaller
print with the E in the middle the smallest letter. Harry wrote to Vera that
he was pleased to hear that she and Rex were living in the Derby St home.
This home is included in the same rates as 1 Dominion Rd - they are Lots 22
and 23 Area 5- both have white picket fences. RIVELIN had a Barfoot & Thompson
sold sign out front. B&T office told us it sold before it was photographed for
advertising...
Henry HALL also owned another property in Derby St and sold 60ft x 100ft to
the Post Office.
These 2 photos of RIVELIN taken 2002 are from Kay.
RIVELIN was also the name of the home of Rex RUSSELL's father, Frank Henry
RUSSELL [ID 32254 in russell.html]: Rivelin, 86 Harpenden Road, St Albans,
Herts, c1948.
Henry also owned 61 Albert Rd around the corner from the Derby St properties.
2 Beaconsfield St is on record as rates paid by Henry HALL, harder to
photograph due to a large wooden vine- covered fence in the front and a car in
the driveway but we took a photo anyway. It is a really lovely old rambling
home with big verandahs front and back and big windows, on a flat section.
Harry must have loved this home and Street to name his trench Beaconsfield.
Lovers Walk, Devonport is aptly named, an attractive, short, narrow, no exit
road leading to Cheltenham Beach lined with pohutukawas and renamed Arawa St.

An excerpt from http://www.morst.govt.nz/pubs/scitech/june96.htm
End of an Era at MoRST
In April, State Services Commissioner Don Hunn announced that Dr Basil Walker, Chief Executive of the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology, is to step down from the position of Chief Executive on 5 July 1996.
Dr Walker has been in the top position since the start up of the Ministry in 1989. His term has seen the development of the Science Ministry from a `gleam in the eye' to an organisation which now has an established and important role in both the public sector and in the science system, and is recognised for the quality of its relationships and of its policy work.
The period covered by Dr Walker's term has seen the successful completion of the most sustained and fundamental reform of science in New Zealand for the past half century. In the wake of the reforms, science funding is now firmly set on a growth path, reflecting greater confidence that science investment by the Government represents value for money. This contrasts with the decline in funding of almost 25% (real dollars) which occurred during the 1980s.
Highlights of Basil Walker's period of stewardship of the Ministry have included the establishment of national priority setting for science funding and the creation of new funding instruments such as the Marsden Fund, the establishment of an underpinning information base for science and technology, the opening up of new intergovernmental science and technology relationships in the Asia Pacific region, and the development of the Office of the Chief Scientist as a focus for improving the input of science to government decision making. Recent developments have included the publication of a discussion draft of a long term strategy for science, research and technology in New Zealand (RS&T:2010) and the advancement of work on the evaluation of the investment in science and the formulation of a comprehensive technology policy.
Dr Walker's career has also included terms as the Chief Executive of what were at the time two major departments; firstly the Ministry of Energy and secondly the Ministry of Defence. Both terms involved major restructuring. In the case of the Ministry of Energy, the outcome was the formation of what were then Electricorp and Coalcorp and a relatively small policy oriented Ministry. In the case of Defence, the outcome was the division of Defence into the New Zealand Defence Force and the Ministry of Defence.
Dr Walker's early career included research and research management in what was then the DSIR (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research) and he played a major role in the development of energy projects based on Maui natural gas during the 1970s.
`While I have enjoyed every aspect of my career in the public service,' said Dr Walker, `my period at the helm in the Science Ministry has bought particular satisfaction. The opportunity to grow an organisation from nothing to maturity while simultaneously contributing to a leading edge reform has been fascinating and challenging. My personal belief in the importance of science and technology to New Zealand's future has added a further dimension to my role at the Ministry.'
Dr Walker said that his decision to step down at this time was influenced by the desirability of having a new chief executive in place prior to the next election but also reflected a judgement that the time was right to find fresh career opportunities.
`I nevertheless intend to maintain a close interest both in the science sector and in the technological development of the enterprise sector,' he said.
24.8.2022 Excerpt from interview with veteran Bob DAVIES reported to RSA Bulletin
August 2022 on serving in Malaysia and then Vietnam: "I did three years and was
asked to stay on by Maj Gen Piers REID on his appointment as CGS but I declined. My
tour as SMA was largely through the penny-pinching era and I was frustrated in not
being able to influence what was happening to soldiers' pay. The then Secretary of
Defence, Basil WALKER, had directed that the army pay structure should reflect the
now predominant neoliberal ideology. And that meant that technicians and other
trades should be paid more than those in combat trades as combat trades had no
utility in civvy street. We had people at this stage deploying to Bosnia and even
though I argued forcefully about the ones at the sharp end should be receiving a
bigger allowance than those in the rear to compensate for the disparity in pay,
that never happened. Under the old pay structure regardless of what corps you were
we all were paid the same. The military is about teams where every person's job is
vital to success on the battlefield. If you pay a trade less, you're telling
them they are not as worthy. In my opinion an unconscionable outcome of the OR pay
restructure occurred."

CONFIDENTIAL NOTES FOR AIRMEN DOWN IN JUNGLE
1. These notes are prepared as a guide for airMen who crash or
parachute in islands of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea occupied by
the Japanese. They have particular regard to the caution that should be
observed with, and help that can be expected from natives who are still
under the domination of the enenemy. The Mandated Territory includes New
Britain-New Ireland.
2. NATIVE ATTITUDE - The native, as a wholee, is disposed to be
friendly with the man, and where his allegiance has been temporarily claimed
by the enemy, he is almost always the unfortunate victim of circumstances
and not hostile by his own inclination.
The enemy deals ruthlessly with any native opposing his will, and the
native attitude is dominated by the enemy strength disposed in his area.
Wherever Allied force has returned in strength the native has quickly
turned against the Japanese.
The presumed present attitude of the natives in defined areas will be dealt
with separately.
3. NATIVE AS8ISTANCE - No one can go very far, or live for many days in
the jungle without native help, essentially, in the matters of guides and
food. Eventually some contact must be made with them, and the following
hints may assist in remaining alive in territory where enemy patrols are
searching for fugitive airmen.
4. APPROACHING VILLAGES - Natives almost invariably hide their women
trom enemy patrols. When approaching a village cautiously, if women can be
seen doing their normal work about the houses it is a good indication that
the immediate area is clear or Japanese. If no women can be seen and
particularly toward evehing when they normally return from their gardens to
do the day's cooking, it is certain that something has disturbed them,
possibly a Japanese patrol in the immediate area.
5. NATIVE GUIDES - When a native is leading you along a path and appears
cheerful and content to remain close beside you, all is well. Should
he appear nervous and accompany you only at a considerable distance, or
stop and endeavour to persuade you to go on to some close feature alone,
it is possible that he is under enemy influence and leading you into an
ambush at the same time endeavouring to keep himself clear of fire. In
these indications it is best to make a wide detour through the jungle.
6. NATIVE TREACHERY - When a small party of white men appear
fatigued and helpless, natives under strong enemy pressure, may attempt to
over-power the party and deliver it to the Japanese. If this is attempted
it is usually done with considerable cunning and preceeded invariably by an
effort to steal or otherwise secure the white man's firearms. The signs
of the usual procedure are evident tension and talking in groups. Then
they will express mock concern for your fatigued condition and suggest that
they help you by carrying your firearms for you. They may attempt to steal
your pistol when you take your clothes off for a wash. Once disarmed you
are an easy victim and tied up "pig fashion" and delivered to the enemy.
Quite apart from any treachery, if a native is carrying your firearm
and the enemy appears suddenly, the native will bolt and you will be left
unarmed. You would be by no means the first to fall into this simple trap,
and the lesson is never to separate yourself from your firearms.
7. TALKING TO NATIVES - Many natives speak pidgin and can readily
understand simple English words. Pidgin cannot be learned from "Useful
Phrases" or other "catchpenny" titles; it requires considerable experience
to be usefully employed. The so-called pidgin published in the press and
magasinies is written for the Australian and American reader to
-understand, but is so remote from true pidgin as to be entirely
unintelligible to the native. Therefore it is better for anyone unfamilar
with natives to use simple English words which, with the aid of a few
signs, will be sufficiently understood to meet his needs.
8. NATIVE FOODS - Any food eaten by natives can be safely eaten by white men
escaping from enemy territory. While it may frequently
appear in a dirty condition it will have been well cooked and more or less free
from injurious filth; in any case tbis will be the least of your worries.
Native gardens are the only source of ample food, and the jungle itself
will not provide a great deal - sometimes wild pawpaws, bush fruits and
berries. As a general rule, if flying foxes and birds eat any bush
fruit it can be safely eaten by man. Wild banana trees when cut down and
split have a central shoot which can be eaten raw. Coconuts, sweet potatoes,
taro, etc. are all native garden produce and obvious foods.
9. FINDING NATIVE VILLAGES AND GARDENS - If in the jungle climb
to some high feature and nearby gardens will be seen seen in small clearings.
More distant ones can be located toward evening when the women return
from their gardens and smoke of village fires can be seen.
10. TAXING A CANOE - If making a getaway by canoe if possible fill it up
with coconuts. Coconuts will serve several wants; firstly the milk of the
nut will satisfy thirst and the meat of the nut is excellent food.
Secondly, if the canoe swamps the coconuts if secured will float it, even
split husks will float for hours and in emergency two coconuts tied
together under tbe arms will make a serviceab1e lifebelt.
11. SHARKS - Curiosity may bring sharks about a life raft. If a shark
approaches a native in the water, the native will shout and beat the
water with his hands once only to scare it away. He will not continue to
beat the water or kick as tbts will attract them, just as a noise of a
shoal of fish jumping does. The old story that a shark must turn over
to bite is a long explored fallacy. A shark has limited sight and is mostly
attracted by noise and smell of blood. Always cover an exposed sore or
wound if possible. If you have a pistol fire it to frighten sharks but
not to hit one. If hit the shark will bleed and others maddened by the
smell of blood will thresh the water and snap at anything.
12. MALARIA - If you have lost your medical kit and are a malarial
subject it is wise to keep away from swamps and low lying country. At
about 1500 ft. above sea level and over there are no malaria infected
mosquitoes.
13. FOOTPRINTS - The enemy will follow your footprints if he can and
will observe great caution to hide his own. If the ground is soft enough
for you to walk barefooted you can cover your trail for some distance.
When you have left your foot-prints in a village never neglect to get the
natives to brush them out; both for your security and for the natives as
the enemy will punish them for befriending you. The best method of
covering your trail is to walk in the water along running streams from time
to time.
14. DOGS - The Japanese have some Alsatian Police Dogs in New Guinea,
although there is no record of their having been used to date to track
Allied personnel. In such event however an easy method of throwing a dog
otf the scent is to walk in a running stream for some distance, then walk
in a wide complete circle on the side of the stream and continue along the
stream as far as desired.
15. AVOID COASTAL VILLAGES AND TRACKS - If you are on a coastline
regularly patrolled by the enemy and have some indication that friendly
natives may be contacted in another area, it is wiser to travel indland as
far as possible, even over a very difficult route,- than to travel by
coastal villages and tracks. The enemy patrols the coast much more
frequently than inland areas and has the natives under firmer
control. You can move much faster and more easily on the coast,- but use it
only if you are certain that it is clear.
16. THE JAP IN THE BUSH - It is useful to remember that the Japanese
soldier is not a good bushman, and he is certainly no better and probably
a very inferior bushman to you. Unless you are wounded and unarmed he
will not follow you for any distance into the jungle, but will wait
and try and ambush you later. He wi1l have to bring native guides wbo
are even more reluctant to follow you in the jungle if they think you are
armed. Normally if you are a fugitive and get ten yards start on a
Jap. patrol in the jungle, lucky hits excepted, you are safe for the time
being.
17. NATURAL SENTRIES - Warning of an approaching party is
frequently given by white cockatoos which will follow any moving
along for some distance screeching angrily. In low growth many
varieties of small birds are easily alarmed and will flutter excitedly
in small groups away from an approaching patrol. At night wild pigs racing
through the undergrowth may indicate that they have been startled by a
patrol. All those signs are well worth watching, the cockatoos in
particular have frequently given a timely warning.
18. ATTITUDE TO NATIVES - It is important to endeavour, as far as
possible, to avoid appearing fugitive and friendless. It is wise to
give the natives the impression that you are undisturbed and tell them
stories of great Allied strength. Endeavour to convince them that you are a
man of considerable importance. Their attitude will often depend on your
appearance and it they get the impression that you are weak- and upset they
may not be so readily inclined to help you, On the other hand if you appear
undisturbed and confident it may turn a difficult situation to your favour.
19. PAYMENT OF NATIVES - A native expects to be paid for his services.
Badges of rank, cap badges, etc., all have considerable value for this
purpose. The promise or a "FUZE" (one hundred shillings) when they bring
you to safety, is a suitable promise or reward, and if successful every
effort should be made to honour the promise. If without items suitable
for payment, write a "pass" on a piece of paper "To the District Officer -
The bearer (name) rendered loyal service providing me with food and
guides for (?) days. Please reward him - signed NAME ONLY." Tell the
native to give it to the "Kiap" when the Japs are defeated, at the sane
time warn him that it is his death warremt if falling into the hands of the
enemy.
20. BUSH NATIVES - While the more educated beach native may sometimes
prove treacherous under enemy influence," the bush native is readily either
whole-heartedly friendly or openly hostile quite apart from any enemy
influence. They will be readily recognised by scant clothing,
native-made loin coverings almost naked compared to the imported
loin-cloths of the beach people. As a general rule the bush native will be
quite friendly and exceedingly curious. Tales of headhunters and cannibals
are almost entirely romantic rubbish and can be completely forgotten.
21. NATIVES GENERALLY - Whenever thc native is not under pressure by
the enemy he will almost always be friendly toward a white man. In
territory dominated by the enemy it is not wise to assume that a native
is friendly until you prove him otherwise. It is safer to regard him as
strictly neutral until you are certain whether he is friendly or
otherwise. Don't try and bluff natives with a pistol unless they are
actually hostile to you, and remember that you have as many enemies as
you can handle on your hands with the Japanese without adding to your
troubles by foolishly making natives antagonistic toward you.

GOOD WORK BY NZ AIRMAN - Damaged Plane Brought Safely Home
(RNZAF Official News Service)
GUADALCANAR, January 30.
With one motor of his Ventura deadened by anti-aircraft fire and 140 miles
separating him from the nearest Allied airfield, Flying Officer VWH Trayes,
RNZAF, of Auckland, put up a fine showing recently by bringing his aircraft
and crew safely through teir peril and making a perfect landing under
hazardous conditions.
A force of New Zealand bombers had raided Japanese installations at Cape St
George, New Ireland, spreading their bombs, smack across the target area.
Rapid fire poured from enemy anti-aircraft posts and Flying Officer Trayes'
aircraft, low over the water at the time, was hit in the wing and starboard oil
cooler, resulting in a failure of the starboard motor. The speed dropped
very quickly.
The pilot tried to gain height and nursing the remaining motor as much as
possible managed to clamber to 1200 feet. By that time the aircraft was
labouring close to its danger speed and Flying Officer Trayes settled down
to keeping the port engine running on just enough power to maintain height.
He had hard work holding the aircraft which staggered along unsteadily.
Soon he was able to capitalize on help from an unusual quarter for reaching
cumulus clouds the aircraft was thrown on to a more even keel by the
updraught, which also boosted its speed and height. Ready in case a sea
landing should be necessary the crew were greatly relieved when Bougainville
hove in sight, but a new problem awaited them. The fighter strip where they
had to land was not long enough for their aircraft. For safety the pilot had
to overshoot a little and when the bomber came to rest its front wheels were
off the sand and just going in to the water off the end of the runway.
Members of Flying Officer Trayes's crew were Flying Officer RH Chaplin
(Hawkes Bay) as navigator, Flight Sergeant CJ Shaw (Hamilton), as wireless
operator and Sergeant CR Thomas (Christchurch) and Sergeant TH Broadbent
(Auckland) as airgunners.
Vic was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross: see photo 12.9.1945

Mr EV Trayes AIR DEPARTMENT
33 Tainui Road, WELLINGTON C1
Devonport, REF NO 5/2/8599 DPR.
AUCKLAND 9th July, 1945
Dear Mr Trayes,
Further to the telegram sent to you by the Hon. the Minister of
Defence with reference to the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross
to your son, Flight Lieutenant Victor William Hall Trayes, I have to
advise that the following is the text of the citation which
accompanied the award:-
"Exceptional qualities of skill, courage and determination have been
displayed by Flight Lieutenant Trayes, in the course of three tours
of operations in the Pacific, during which he has completed 104
operational missions. His last two tours have been as captain of
bomber aircraft, and have involved a series of low-level attacks on
important Japanese installations and troop concentrations on New
Ireland. He has also made many medium-level daylight bombing attacks
on the Rabaul area, flying through accurate and intense anti-aircraft
fire, and setting a fine example by his determination and courage.
When one motor was put out of action by anti-aircraft fire during his
second tour, he flew his damaged aircraft 180 miles across the sea to
friendly territory, landing successfully without further damage, on a
half-completed airstrip. He has throughout, distinguished himself by
his personal bravery and intense devotion to duty in the face of the
enemy".
On behalf of the Air Board, I desire to convey to you my sincere
congratulations on your son's fine achievement.
Yours faithfully,

Awarded the Pacific Star on 4.10.1945. His service number was 415797.
He flew 1884 hours in WW2, having several close calls with death.
He flew many missions from Guadacanal in the Solomons, and also flew to
Bougainville and to Fiji and New Caledonia from Auckland. Here are two photos

He served in GR Squadrons 1,2,3,4,9 and Transport Squadrons 40 and 41.
He was one of the Airforce team that won the Auckland Rugby Premiership in the
Gallaher Shield final: see photo 13.10.1945 (NZH or Weekly News?). In 1946 he
returned to work for C and E Co. He was invested with his DFC at Government
House, Auckland on 19.5.1949. He did a B.Comm. He became financial adviser
for the MYERS family, and NZ Wine and Spirits, and Commercial Manager for
Campbell and Ehrenfried. They bought a farm in Kaipara Harbour in 1977. They
have many family photos. He published his memoirs in 1993 in a volume "VICTOR
VICTOR" (113 pp including 63 pp of text.) I have sent copies to the Takapuna,
Auckland Central and National Libraries. Let Vic's family or me know if you
want a copy and we'll see what we can arrange.
The NZ Womens Weekly for 23.2.1959 contains an article on his family "So the
dolls came too" with 5 photos and one of their boats. In 1980 he was chief
organiser of Takapuna Grammar's 50th Jubilee. A member of the Albion Lodge No
45 until 1985. He bought a 26 foot mulletboat yacht, the Starlight. They sailed
to Kawau Island where Kristan and Andrew have a bach: see NZH? 26.10.1991. The
photos under 34* are from Vic's collection.
From Jan's eulogy:
Dad left school at 15, to join Campbell and Ehrenfried, a wine and spirits and
hotel management company, with whom Dad spent his entire working life. In his
usual modest manner, Dad reports that:
"I only got the job because of a very good reference from Mr Colin LITTLEJOHN,
then headmaster of TGS who said: Young TRAYES, though diminutive in stature, is
the soul of honour and I can thoroughly recommend him". I was so impressed with
this eulogy that I really tried to be that way." Dad started as an office boy
on 15/- ($1.50) a week. "I was two years as office boy and held the record of
Strand Arcade to the Post office to collect the mail and back in 5 minutes!"
As you all know, Dad only ever had one speed - flat out!
Between 1935 and 1940 Dad completed his professional accounting qualifications
part-time at ATI, while still working at Campbell and Ehrenried. In his spare
time he played tennis, rugby, sailed boats and was a member of the rowing club.
By the look of his photos, he also did lots of socialising, fishing and
boating. With the outbreak of war in 1939, Dad enrolled in the army for
training, but then decided the airforce had more appeal...
Although he never made a big deal of it, Dad did have one very close shave
after being hit in the wing by anti-aircraft fire. He flew many miles on one
engine using the uplift from the cumulous clouds to maintain stability and
ultimately make a safe landing. For this he was awarded the DFC, and although
he would be really embarrassed by this, we would like to read part of his DFC
citation that was sent to his father in 1945:
"Exceptional qualities of skill, courage and determination have been
displayed by Flight Lieutenant TRAYES, in the course of three tours of
operation in the Pacific, during which he completed 104 operational missions...
When one motor was out, he flew his damaged aircraft 180 miles across the sea
to friendly territory, landing successfully without further damage on a
half-completed air strip. He has throughout distinguished himself by his
personal bravery and intense devotion to duty in the face oft he enemy."
Dad, of course saw it differently. As he said in his log book, it wasn't
about skill. It was "actually, if not certainly, a miracle from the good Lord
that we made it safely back". In fact, he did not even include the citation in
his memoirs, such is his humility.
After the war, Dad returned to his old job and completed a B Com at Auckland
University. He continued to play rugby for North Shore and the Services. More
significantly for us, he became closely involved with the TGS Ex Pupils
Association, where he was Secretary and then President. Because of Dad's
connections in the hospitality industry he was able to arrange great venues
for ex pupils' trips, and it was on one of these that he met Mum.
"At almost over the hill at 27 or 28, I found my perfect girl... she of course
realized I wasn't the perfect man, but I'd do."
In February, 1940, Dad proposed to Mum from his hospital bed, where he was
recovering from a rugby injury and in the original St Peters ...
Dad was never happier than when he was on or in the sea. He always felt you
should visit a beach every day if you could, and mostly he did. Like everything
else, Dad approached a swim at full speed, charging down the beach, crashing in
to the waves, and heading for Rangitoto with thrashing arms and feet. For Dad,
boating was one of life's great gifts. He built his first boat when he was 18,
and he just kept right on building them. Dad built us kayaks, and home-made
water skis (or shees, as he call them). We had home-built runabouts and home
made life jackets which would have taken us straight to the bottom if we had
ever been tossed into the drink. We had banana boats and rubber duckies. And
the pièce de resistance: a 26ft mullet boat, called STARLIGHT...
Mum and Dad built their house at the beginning of their married life, helped
by Poppa TRAYES, a stone mason, and Puppa CADNESS, a plumber. It was the only
house they ever lived in. It was Dad's pride and joy and he never tired of the
gardens or the lovely view of Rangitoto...
One of Dad's more ambitious do-it yourself efforts, was his project to link
the back garden down the sheer cliff to the beach 100 feet below. His
brilliant idea was to acquire a ladder from the Ponsonby fire station...
These activities were many, and as well as his day job, included tutoring at
AIT, and membership of the Wakatere Boating Club, the North Shore Rugby Club,
the Waitemata Golf Club, the Brevet Club, vestry membership and warden at this
church, auditing work for many organizations, to name but a few. In 1977, he
chaired the committee which organised the TGS 50th jubilee celebrations...
His funeral service was held at St Peter's Anglican Church, Killarney St,
Takapuna on October 20th, 2008.
Jan has kindly sent me his Service - stored as VicTRAYESservice.pdf
& a tribute from his grandchildren - stored as GrandiesTribute.doc
NOTE Vic flew twice in April 1942 with a close cousin Pilot Officer Terence O.
HALL at Wigram. HOW IS THIS MYSTERY COUSIN RELATED? He seems unlikely to be a
son of 48 Leslie HALL, so would have to be the son of an unknown brother of
4 Henry HALL that also emigrated to New Zealand.
His war record at the Defence Dept may hold the clue! Vic says they also met at
Milford, so he may have been an Aucklander, and that he died c1945.

My email to family 14.7.2024: This day in 1897 Nana was born in Auckland, as
Vera Bessie Hall. Nana and poppa lived across the road at 19 Cathedral Place
and would be outside on their front terrace reading waiting to talk to Russell
and Peter and me as we walked home from Parnell school each day.
Christmas dinner would always be in their fancy dining room. On special
occasions we could persuade Nana to make us a chocolate log filled with whipped
cream and covered with chocolate icing and walnuts.
I have a very early memory of her taking something out of the oven visiting us
in the state house we had briefly before we moved into 18 Cathedral Place.
My next memory of her is underneath her clothesline. I was playing with
plasticine on the concrete but it melted in the sun to her annoyance.
Sometimes I'd play cards with Nana and Poppa. If he tried to cheat she would
tell him off! They had a gramophone before we did and I loved hearing the
musicals they played. Like The King and I.
As well as being the general manager of ABC, where Russell and I worked in our
highschool holidays in Khyber Pass, Poppa was a member of the Saint George's
Masons, of Newmarket Rotary Club, and a Steward for the Avondale Jockey Club.
This meant sometimes having to decide who won in a close race. It was an
honorary position he took very seriously. I inherited the binoculars he used
for the job. Going to the races was a very posh affair. Nana and Mum wore
gloves. Nana wore her Fox fur which creeped me out with its eyes and teeth. In
later years she wore a mink. I only remember joining them once. We ate fancy
food in a big tent.
As Nana’s eyes deteriorated, she would get me to thread her needle.
Today I still enjoy threading my needles and darning my socks!
When I was at Stanford she went into hospital for a minor complaint but fell
and broke her hip. I sent Money and two letters to an Auckland florist with
instructions to to send one letter with flowers one day and the other letter
with flowers a week later. But the florist sent both letters with only one
bouquet and I got a letter from Nana thanking me but showing her confusion.
Her writing had degenerated.
It was so painful to hear that she had died on 18.6.1970. Especially so as
I did not fly back for the funeral due to the expense.
When someone dies you don't stop loving them. I love my Nana so much!
Vera in her 40s.

38 2-Leslie George HALL (1901 Auckland-1.9.1960) Buried with Morva at
Cheltenham Cemetery, Melbourne. (In the birthday book c1888 of 647 of
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kitwithers/rathbone/rathbone.html
there is an entry "LE Hall Sept 28." Possibly someone else.)
He enrolled 23.5.1910 at Devonport District School No. 9456 with his brother
Reg 45. Mum has his photo in military uniform c1915. He built houses.
He came to Australia is the 1930's and never went back to New Zealand. Flo [33]
kept in touch with him. Les aged c28:
Here again is the photo of Les with his father Henry taken 4.3.1921:
Geoff [381] has letters 17.3.1931 (the day Henry d) & 20.3.1931 to Leslie G
HALL c/ The PO, Manurewa from Douglas D VICKERMAN, Land & Estate agent &
valuer: "... with regard to the rate notice you have sent me in connection with
the farm, I had better pay this out of the next rent due on the 20th.
Geoff [381] has his postcard album. This includes a photo of "Cousin Olive,
Aunt Jennie's eldest girl, Stratford upon Avon R." Olive and Jenny are
6471 Olive Jeannie PASHLEY b 1891 Birmingham, and 647 Sarah Jane "Jenny"
RATHBONE b1863 Sheffield, of rathbone/rathbone.html
Some bio from Geoff: Les came to Oz about 1935. Quite a dapper chap, he
always dressed well. He was very entrepreneurial. He won a contract to Myer to
make mousetraps & skipping rope handles. He started AM HALL & Co, a real
estate business in Camberwell (his mother's initials). He made a kitset dinghy
- Meiers ordered 50.
He had a bach at Rye on the Mornington peninsula. Les built a Canadian canoe
when Geoff was 8. Then a 12' klinker (a ship's pinnace) of kauri with a gaff
rigging. Later Geoff rebuilt it 3 times.
In 1939 Les joined up for WW2. He was barracked in Victoria then went to
defend Darwin. He was debunked in 1945, coming out ill. But it took years for
his widow to get a war pension.
Morva's niece Graeme REES-JONES met Les in Melbourne at the end of WW2, &
called Les Pop after Popeye, to distinguish him from Morva's brother Les.
After Geoff was born, Graeme came to live with them in Camberwell. Graeme did
the bookwork & found that Les had been swindled of a large sum of money by 2
colleagues.
When Geoff was 15 he & his dad rebuilt a 1947 Morris Minor together.
Les had a series of businesses. He sold Vauxhalls in Seymour. He was
hospitalized several times. "Mum wouldnt drive so I drove 50 miles in school
uniform to see Dad in hospital." Les died 1960 in Heisenberg military hospital
after his leg was drained with tubes & leeches. He had a bad heart.

381 3-Geoffrey Leslie HALL (26.2.1945 Mt Albert, Victoria, Oz)
c1976 Cheltenham, Melbourne, Australia.
He has his grandfather's 1879 travel diary kept on his trip from England to
Auckland on the barque LEBU. Charmaine has typed it & I’ll put it on this site shortly. Geoff also has old family albums, postcard photos of Denton, a lodge certificate from Royal Order of Foresters for Henry HALL and many other family treasures. Some bio: Geoff went to Carey Grammar in Kew,
Melbourne. Les wante Geoff to be an engineer but Geoff liked drawing. He did a
commercial art course. After Les died he moved to Highatt public school in
Melbourne then became an apprentice motor mechanic at City Brakes, Beaumaris,
Vic. then at 2way Motors where his leg was crushed in an accident. After rehab
in Kew he learned to walk again & at 21 was put in charge of 22 men at the
Melbourne branch. He married Charmaine & repiled their first home in
Sandringham. He joined a cabinet making business & built some elaborate
furniture. He started boat building, & built 40-50' yachts at Williamstown,
Vic. He became resident shipwright at Hobsons Bay Yacht Club, where he rebuilt
a 50' timber boat, The Idler c1977. It was an ex pilot cutter about 90 years
old. The Yacht Club Commodore, an ex Master Mariner, took it on an ardous
voyage thru Philips Head, where it foundered & sank.
Geoff built yachts all over Vic. c1972-75.
He helped fund Deep Purple to Oz for the Sunbury Pop
Festival & stage managed them. Later he brought out Queen & ran a series of
dances. He built a 42' yacht in a client front yard at Sunshine Beach, Noosa.
He built Cooters until the Tax Dept tax stopped that. He had a cabinetmaker
business Licence To Joinery, then a kitchen shop in Noosa, The Cooking Company.
Then restaurants? Retirement & The Stock Market, & the present Coconut Grove.
In 1967 Geoff had a 1946 MG TC. Geoff built a yacht Galadriel. At
one time Rob THORNTON was living on it & had been gill fishing in its dingy.
But police couldnt board the yacht without the captain's permission (Geoff's)
as the yacht was registered with Lloyds.
His current boat Salt Aire is a 48' power boat. After closing Australia
Boat Building, he did concept & design for dozens of restaurants & shops in
Noosa, including these restaurants: Sales, Rococcos, Barnardos & Sheraton Beach
(gone now). He also designed, built & renovated houses.
Geoff has 1500 phantom comics.

Check out our website www.coconutgrovebistro.com. We also had a trip to

We also have a cruising motor launch called Saltaire which we go north on
whenever we can, usually to the Whitsunday Islands although not as often as we
would like now that we have the restaurant.
We have our house in Noosa on the market at the moment...

*CHESHIRE/LANCASHIRE
DENTON was in Cheshire but was taken over by Manchester, Lancs. It lies on the
border of these 2 counties. It is c5 miles SE of Manchester today and comes
under Greater Manchester. By 1891 the were under LANCASHIRE prior to that
CHESHIRE. Denton, (CHS), Greater Manchester is c30 miles from Sheffield.
(This Denton is much more likely to have a hatter working there than Denton
Otley. That Denton is a very small place on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors.
Not somewhere to practice being a hatter. - EP 2001.) 0 in 1871

They have the 1851 census on fiche. John Marsden, General Secretary wrote 2001:
These are deposited at LDS but they are in BOOK form and so they will
not supply to local centres...surname indexes only and not full transcriptions.
We can supply all titles mail order - see the web site - bookshop pages.
Had the name been very unusual, I could have done a search but there
will be too many HALL entries to make this viable. I can only suggest you
employ a local researcher and I attach some addresses below:

*YORKSHIRE has 3 Ridings:
Riding meant 'third' as in a fraction of one third, so by definition you
cannot have four of them!
They are geographical divisions of Yorkshire, and I suspect it was because
of old history and the fact that it is such a large county. The old 'county
town' of the North Riding was Northallerton, of the East Riding I think
Beverley and Wakefield for the West Riding. Interesting to see that all
three places are now so much smaller than several of the modern cities in
the county. -Judith Pitchforth, Hon Secretary, Sheffield and District FHS

10,000) is http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
For example clicking there on Yorkshire and then Sheffield gave this map c1855.
To get Upperthorpe, I was advised to click on Yorkshire then Walkley, then
click on the S arrow at top R to get map to the S.
upperthorpe.gif At the top R you can read Philadelphia, and
below that the inverted L of the infirmary. W of that is Portland
Place on Upperthorpe Rd, and W again you can see "Upperthorpe" (and
"Upperthorpe cottages" above it to the R) running below the letters
LLA in NETHER HALLAM across the top. Harder to read below and L of
the "Upp" is "UPPERTHORPE ROAD" running SW to NE crossing the word
"Upperthorpe" at the "h". The road runs left into a T which is "Heavy
Gate Road" which runs NW thru the E and R in NETHER. Just above the T
is Steel Bank and just below Springvale and going S, Prospect Villa,
then Prospect House and then Crooke's Moor crossing the road S and
parallel to Upperthorpe Rd called "Crooke's Moor Road". To the R of
the Infirmary is St Phillip's on the N side of "Infirmary Road", not
far SW of the River. As one moves E and S from there the city gets
denser. If one clicks on the map to the R one finds the Workhouse just
SW of the river, which bends in a U. On the N side of the upper arm of
the U as it bends horizontal is the Midland Railway Station... Again
the map is c1855.

gives 3 colour 1999 PHOTOS OF UPPERTHORPE.
Remember that Henry HALL was living at Walkley when he married in 1877?
Selecting Yorkshire then Walkley at old-maps above gave this map c1855 showing Lower and Upper Walkley on lower left in Nether-Hallam Ward:
http://atschool.eduweb.co.uk/stmaryswalkley/local_map.html This map of WALKLEY, SHEFFIELD shows Walkley St as 2 blocks N of Upperthorpe St.

Try here for more info on Walkley, Sheffield.
This site has the 1851 and 1871 Censuses for "Birkendale View".
This is a small area of 65 houses and 9 acres in NW Sheffield next to
Upperthorpe: see http://www.birkendale.org.uk/ Presumably in Walkley.

14.4 DENTON, GREATER MANCHESTER
DENTON used to be one of the major centres in England for felt top hats. That
would fit in with William being a hatter and coming from Denton in Cheshire.-EP
14.5 Bristol & Gloucester
Gloucester Soc. of Genealogists http://www.sog.org.uk/prc/gloucester.html
Clicking on B gives many resources for Bristol

The Manchester regt is one of the likely regiments he would be assigned to.
Try the online war memorials. If he was living in Walthamstow in 1914 he'd be
on the War memorial there (which I think is in St. Mary's) and not at Hyde.
