"Denton was one of the centres of the hatting trade. Felt hatting was
quite specialised and depended on a good "soft" water supply, so small
areas often became magnets for the hatting industry. As George was born
in Bristol, I would suggest you have a look around the Bitton-Oldland
Common area just to the west of Bristol as this was the chief hatting
area for Bristol. Quite a number of Bitton hatters moved to Denton
during the 19th Century, so it is possible he learned his trade there!
- David BAXENDELL davidbax@paradise.net.nz 2002.
See http://www.bittonhistory.org.uk/industries/hat-making/
1877 marriage certificate of his son Henry [3] lists George as a hatter of
Upperthorpe. (Henry's death certificate gives George as a barrister!!)
There is an Upperthorpe near Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire. But this one is
almost surely "UPPER-THORPE, hamlet in the parish of Sheffield
and the township of Nether-Hallam; 1 mile from Sheffield." (West Riding)
- according to http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/yrksdict/
"A Topographical Dictionary of Yorkshire" 1822, by Thomas LANGDALE,
(also available at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mwi/e-riding.html)
It is now a district of Sheffield near Walkeley. (One says it is
very near to a town named Harthill, SEE of Sheffield; another says it is W of
Sheffield.) See "14. Links" at HALL family.

So the family moved from Warwick to Stockport to Gorton, Manchester to Denton
to Sheffield then George & Elizabeth & son John moved back to Denton by 1881.
There are 13 Dentons listed by www.streetmap.co.uk Our one is NOT that in N
