*1584 Deal http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ pet*t deal gave 70 hits:
1584-1603 Margery PETTIT of Chilham 19 miles from Deal Concealing superstitious
objects, etc. to certify that she hath converted the pieces of copes to
cushions or other use and to certify the order of Mr. Official taken with her
for receiving communion, 69; failed to do so, 74; evidence given that the
letters missive were hurled after the messenger when he tried to deliver them,
76; 79; committed to Westgate prison for refusing to take the oath ex officio,
81; bond for appearance in court [erased], 84; examination [alleges that the
pieces of copes and the beads found in her house had been there many years and
that she had not seen the images until a month before]; 150; examination
[refuses to obtain absolution or deface the pieces of copes], 166.
1673 June 20 Phineas PETT, Shipwright's Assistant, Woolwich. He has docked the
fire ships which need repair. Yesterday the small vessel for Deal was launched
and will soon be ready to sail. The 2 new sloops will soon be ready. He
recommends Mr Gale, Master of the Katherine yacht for one of them. Some of
Mr Mayor's elm has arrived but they need timber for keel pieces.
The Nightingale is ready to sail.
PETT is a village and civil parish in the Rother District of East Sussex.
The village is located 5 miles north-east of Hastings on the edge of PETT
Level, the one-time marshes stretching along the coast of Rye Bay. Wikipedia.
1673 June 25 Phineas PETT, Shipwright's Assistant, Woolwich. Asks for Deal to
fit the 2 fire ships. Yesterday the Bonito sloop was launched and the other
will be launched tomorrow. Their commanders arrived yesterday but no Boatswains
have appeared. He is sorry that Robert Gale, Master of the Katherine yacht, was
not appointed to one of them. Asks to use the keel piece from Deptford...
1673 Sept 10 Phineas PETT, Shipwright's Assistant, Woolwich. Yesterday evening
the Constant Warwick sailed. The Gloucester, the Stavereen and the Bonadventure
are preparing to dock when the Advice will be launched. They need warrants to
repair the Bonadventure and build the yacht. They need timber and he wishes the
Board would deal with Mr Johnson. His Majesty [King Charles II] will be there
this afternoon to see the beginning of works on his new yacht and Sir Samuel
Morland's new water engine. Asks the Board to attend.
1673 Sept 19 Phineas PETT, Shipwright's Assistant, Woolwich. On Saturday they
launched the Advice and yesterday the Gloucester was docked. Today if possible
they will put the Bonadventure and the Stavereen in the double dock. They have
dismantled the water engine ready for collection by Sir Samuel Morland. The
yacht built for Deal requires caulking and minor repairs. He is preparing a
comparison of the costs for made masts versus whole tree masts. Requests the
latest prices of Gothenburg and New England masts in order to complete this
work. He cannot attend the Board as he is not well.
1673 Oct 22 John Ruffhead. He wishes to clarify his complaint against J W. All
ironwork that he delivers is weighed and measured by the clerks. William Allin
acts for Mr Gregory, Francis Buttris for Mr Wilson and William PETT for the
Master Shipwright. The complaint arose from an order from the Sheerness
Commissioner for 2 pieces of timber and ironwork for 2 rudders. Complains about
the way J W ordered F B to deal with this in his books and to withhold the
notes from Mr Curtis. Since his previous letter to the Board J W has ordered
his man to strike out a bill for a capstan sent to Mr Daniel for the
Dreadnought. Summarises his previous letter and offers to repeat the details if
any have been lost. Begs the Board to redress his grievance.
1673 Nov 1 Phineas PETT, Master Shipwright, Woolwich. On Monday, when he
attended the survey of the East India prizes, the Board told him of the
accident to the Advice, and said it was the fault of the Carpenter. When he
landed at Woolwich he sent one of his Foremen on board the Advice who found
that it was due to the carelessness of the Master and Officers in placing the
provisions too far forward. The Carpenter, David White, was in Deptford at the
time. He had left orders for his Mate to deal with the scuppers. He finds the
damage is much less than reported. He suspects the Gunner claimed damage to the
powder to cover up his embezzlement. He believes the Carpenter to be a careful
man and not to be blamed. This afternoon, Mr Shish sent an order to survey the
Diamond, Dragon, Assurance and the Guernsey, to be repaired by merchant
Shipwrights. He judges this to be ill advised, but will nonetheless attend
Mr Shish on Monday.
1674 Feb 26 Phineas PETT Report on his survey work on two ships at Blackwall.
Now that the days have been brought to a considerable length the men would be
able to do a good day's work if they had enough timber at the dockyard. He has
received a letter from B. St. Michel at Deal on the employment of the Deal
yacht. On the shortage of timber. Report of the Bristol being attacked by worm
and notes on sheathing. Woolwich
1674 Mar 5 Phineas PETT. Report on paying off shipwrights. Note on the
agreements for allowing men to go and receive pay later has tended to lose
some of the better workers and matters on this. Work concerning the Deal yacht.
Woolwich
1674 Apr 2 Phineas PETT. Matters concerning the reduction of men at the
dockyard. Report on men necessary for future work at the yard. Work on ships
and of the yard. The Deal yacht is nearly ready to return to the Downs.Woolwich
1674 Aug 31 Phineas PETT Note of a survey of ships now at Woolwich.
Matters concerning the mast for the Deal yacht. Woolwich
1678 June 10 Commissioner Sir Richard Beach, Chatham. Asks the Board to
contract for Sir Charles Bickerstaffe's elm. Asks whether the great mast and
bowsprits should be sent to Deptford for the Port Mahon. They need Prussia deal
for the upper decks of the new ship. The Master Shipwright only has Mr PETT for
an Instrument to look after the forge and the cranes which is too much work for
one man. Believes another Instrument should be allowed so that the quality of
iron and the quality of timber can both be properly supervised. The crews of
the guard boats are demanding their money.
1678 June 14 Captain John Tyrrell, the Drake, the Downs. They took in 3 months'
provisions in the River and by order of Sir John Holmes took in 3 months' more
in the Downs except fish. He has Sir John Holmes's order to take no oatmeal in
lieu of fish. The victualler say s he has none. They have 61 men on board. He
has asked Mr PETT for books but has not received them. Asks for them to be sent
to the Clerk of the Cheque at Deal. Last Monday he took an English pink, the
Mary from Falmouth, from an Ostend privateer. On the advice of Lord Howard he
brought the pink to the Downs and sealed her hatches. The privateer carried off
her Master, Richard Smith. The boatswain needs junk and the Carpenter's stores
are almost used up.
1678 Sept 5 Phineas PETT, Master Shipwright, Chatham. There is only one
contract for plank which is made with John and William Best and does not
include any 4 inch plank which they need urgently together with long treenails.
Reports that they received spruce deal in July on the Fortune hoy of London,
Master Robert Wood and in August on the Transporter. They still need fir for
the 3rd Rate in the Double Dock.
1678 Sept 29 Commissioner Sir Richard Beach, Chatham. He will order the
discharge of the Henrietta's company and send the list to the Gravesend Clerk
of the Cheque. He does not know what arrangements Mr PETT and Mr Lawrence have
made regarding the hulk which was sunk near the North of the yard but it will
cost a great deal to have her weighed and sent to Sheerness. One of his sons is
dying so he has not got time to send a fuller report at present. He will comply
with the directions regarding Widow Ruffhead.
1678 Oct 4 Phineas PETT, Master Shipwright, Chatham. Because of the illness of
Mr Lawrence and the other Assistants he cannot undertake to clear the hulk to
make her float and it will be difficult to procure men to do it as there is a
great deal of sickness. Asks to be excused from the task.
1679 Jan 4 Commissioner Sir Richard Beach, Chatham. He gives an account of his
trip to Maidstone. No timber merchant will deal with the Board for payment in
course. Mr. Spong will supply 60 loads if he can agree for it for the repair of
the London. The Master Shipwright's account of plank wanting is enclosed (not
now attached). 3,000 or 4,000 treenails have come from Sir Charles Bickerstaffe
and the rest being shipped. The knees mentioned by the Shipwright cannot be had
here. The Purveyor has marked all the timber in the Master Shipwright's late
demand for the new ships. Mr. Mason's timber has come down in several boats and
the boatmen have thrown the timber under the crane to the hindrance of other
merchants' timber. Though Aug. Robinson knows of the Board's orders, he seems
unwilling to continue as foreman if he must allow his deputy so much, though he
is allowed two servants in the yard and one afloat. Notice will be taken of the
quarters wherein Robinson has been allowed a deputy. Mr. PETT, late Shipwright
at Woolwich, and Mr. Eason were formerly assistants to Commissioner Taylor and
gives details of pay, and how they took turns in being ashore and afloat, but
this method was discontinued after the Restoration. He believes that an able
and active assistant would save money and keep the men to their work.
Ibid. fol. 22; 'Autobiography of Phineas PETT,' Navy Records Society (1917)...
It condemned the Surveyor, the Treasurer Sir Robert Mansell, and the Master
Shipwright, Phineas PETT, for their venture with the Resistance, a ship built
out of the king's stores, which sailed as a transport in the fleet carrying the
embassy led by the Earl of Nottingham to conclude the peace treaty with Spain
in 1605, and which made a profit of £300 from selling off naval stores to the
Spaniards. Sir John thought it prudent to retire and sold his office in 1611.
1682 Nov 29 William Fendall, Deal. He did not send the account of the stores
sooner because Samuel PETT was concerned with a ship that was lately cast away
upon the Goodwin, from which he wished to save some of his goods but was in the
Isle of Thanet when the Board's letter was received. in need of a capstan.
1688 Nov 23 Sir Francis Wheeler, the Kent at Blackstakes. Has all the
Boatswain's and Carpenter's stores aboard and some of the Centurion's portion.
He will take in the rest tomorrow and will come up to the Hope when weather
permits. The yard has no yawl but SIR Phineas PETT says he should buy one at
Deal and he will pay his bill. Captain Shovell promised to take up the shot,
hawsers and anchors that were lost from the Centurion near the foreland but...

provisions to the Chatham, also a receipt was refused to Captain Kenny of the
Swan for barrels of meat because they were bought abroad, they have no
information from the Straits about the accounts of William PETTIT of the
Providence ketch, Mr. Bowles having come ashore at Deal indisposed and not sent
papers and no account yet received from Mr. Reynolds and finally give reasons
why they will not allow the hire charge of the tender of the Smyrna Merchant

Thomas's will, proved in 1625, mentions no children, only relations.

0 Thomas PETTIT of Hoath m Elizabeth WALTERS 1630 with several children.
Rita notes: The Chilham PETTITs link to the Dent-de-Lion line who lived at
Margate. They had a heraldic shield and generally if you ask for a
"professional" search on our name, you are told their history! They also
appear in a lot of books on Kent, but there does not appear as yet any link
with our line. Our line back in the early 1500s appear fairly wealthy, but
were firmly settled in Ringwould and with no apparent connection to Margate.

* IGI for Deal not available: Susan YOUNG 2002: gneagnie@vaxxine.com
Organization: The Family Historian
Sorry to say that the IGI does not include C of E records for Deal. My Kent
Research Planning Aid on Maureen RAWSON's site has been recently up-dated
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mrawson/research.html and contains
all then current information for IGI christenings and marriages, Boyd's
Marriage Index, British Vital Records Index and the National Burial Index.
For Deal parish records, you will have to go the route of accessing them
directly.
This url gives years IGI etc are available, eg
Folkestone: IGI bp 1635-1840, IGI m 1635-1840, Boyds m 1651-75; 1701-25
Deal is not on the IGI nor on the BVRI. It has however been indexed by
the Kent Family History Society (though I don't know how late it goes
-- certainly to 1774 when I was looking.) If you ask for a specific
person on the list (which I did for my one) you'll certainly get
someone reply -- I had four people! -MG
