E12 WILLIAM FOREMAN (D7) - was born on 9th July 1822 and baptised on 4th
August 1822 at Whitstable Parish Church. In adult life he was a
ship-owner, (of the brigantine "CHANCE"), and a master butcher. In
Wallace HARVEY's book "The Merchant Ships of Whitstable", he states that
"THE CHANCE" was built in 1842 in Sunderland, and was registered as
number 5056, at a weight of 134 tons. It was
originally a brig but was altered to square rig when she was bought from
Chatham on 20th November 1845. The owners are given as George FOREMAN,
Goldfinch, William FOREMAN, Hannah FOREMAN and Edward Kemp. The ship's
masters were Richard FOREMAN (13th December 1845), Henry Coleman (6th
January 1849), John FOREMAN (21st January 1852) and G. FOREMAN (27th
October 1854). She was lost off Hartlepool on 2nd January 1857. Her
figurehead was salvaged and for many years adorned the gable-end of a
wooden building in Horsebridge Road, Whitstable, until it was blown up
by a German bomb. The figurehead was again salvaged, and is now housed
in the Whitstable Museum. The curious wooden building it used to adorn
is made reference to by Charles DICKENS in "All the Year Round" number
31, dated 25th November 1859, where he describes a Whitstable Native:-
"As he grows old he sees nothing to wonder at if a wooden staircase
comes down from the top rooms of his father's house at the exterior of
the side wall; and he thinks an old figurehead of Minerva, swept ashore,
perhaps form the wreck of some collier, an ornament for a parapet
superior to any statue that was ever hewn out of stone."
It is interesting to note that the foreman of the Oyster Fishing
Company used to stand on that stairway to issue orders to the free
dredgermen standing in the street below. It was also here that William
Joyce, the World War II traitor known as "Lord Haw Haw" would address
his 'black shirt' followers.
William married Emma Jane ADAMS on 22nd March 1849, by banns, at
Whitstable Parish Church, in the presence of John Durry ADAMS and E.J.
ADAMS. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. R.J. MORRIS. Emma was born
in 1828, the daughter of Edward ADAMS, shipowner. William and Emma had
ten children. They were:
William Henry FOREMAN (ref F40)
Rosa Jane FOREMAN (ref F41)
Edward Kennett FOREMAN (ref F42)
Sidney FOREMAN (ref F43)
Emmeline FOREMAN (ref F44)
Sarah Frances FOREMAN (ref F45)
Walter Kitchingham FOREMAN (ref F46)
Frank FOREMAN (ref F47)
Herbert FOREMAN (ref F48)
Ernest Richard FOREMAN (ref F49)20
In the 1851 census return for Whitstable they are shown as living at
Sea Street, and at that time their son George was with them, along with
two servants, George FOREMAN, 21, a butcher journeyman, and Julia
Ockenfall, 17, a housemaid.
Sidney and Herbert both died 'in infancy'. In 1870 William and his
family moved to Canada, having been contacted by Emma's brother Edwin,
who was already there, in Port Carling. (Rosa Jane and Emmeline stayed
behind in Whitstable.) They travelled on the "S.S. EUROPEAN", leaving
England on 19th April 1870. They had received "land grants" in Canada.
They arrived in Port Carling, Ontario from20
where they made their way to Muskoka, and settled on the Indian River,
at a place called the 'Narrows', across from what was known as 'Indian
Landing'. The FOREMANs were industrious, frugal people and therefore
well-equipped to become good settlers. Indeed, one reference relates
that the FOREMANs were "the most important of the settlers of 1870, so
far as the influence on ourselves is concerned". They had some money
and they bought a place with a house already built, and with some
clearing. The previous owner was moving to begin a hotel business; the
FOREMANs paid $ 700. This gave them possession of "Lot 30" in the
"third concession (Medora)". [William junior took up lot 30 in the 2nd
concession, and Edward Kennett had lot 32 in the second concession].
These lots were all on the downstream side of the Indian River. Later
they moved to a house on the bay now known as "FOREMAN's Bay". There
they cut a clearing and started the arduous task of making a living, at
whatever work was available. The children all attended the first
school, entering into the development of the pioneer community. The
family took an active interest in the religious life of the settlement,
and William was one of the trustees who signed the patent from the Crown
for the property on which the United (then Methodist) Church now stands.
Steam boats were making their appearance on the lakes at this time and
work was created in towing, and carrying passengers. The FOREMAN boys
helped carrying the mail from Gravenhurst, usually walking, sometimes on
horseback. William and Emma moved to Red Deer, Alberta in 1891, where
they established a settlement which they called 'FOREMAN'. They spent
the rest of their lives in Red Deer.
E13 WALTER FOREMAN (D7) - was born on 19th July 1824, and was baptised
on 15th August 1824 at Whitstable Parish Church. In adult life he was a
shipwright, and owned the schooner "SANCHO PANZA" in 1849, with Richard
FOREMAN shown as the ship's "MASTER". In Wallace HARVEY's book "The
Merchant Ships of Whitstable", the "SANCHO PANZA" is shown as being
built in 1828 at New Shoreham, Sussex, with a registration number of
2536 and a tonnage of 146 tons. The owners are shown as Walter FOREMAN,
Richard John FOREMAN, John Spencely, C. LAWSON and Adams, 1861. The
ship's masters are listed as FOREMAN (1861), Harnett (1864), Baker
(1867) and Carlton. The vessel was bought from London on 19th December
1848 and was insured for A3 760. One mast and her figurehead were
removed on 18th September 1855. On 23rd January 1897 she stranded on
the Pye Sand near Harwich, and was wrecked. Walter married Elizabeth
Quaif NICHOLLS on 7th September 1848 at Whitstable Parish Church, after
banns, in the presence of Emma ADAMS and William FOREMAN. The ceremony
was conducted by Rev. R.J. MORRIS. Elizabeth was born in 1828 at
Whitstable, the daughter of Thomas NICHOLLS, an oyster-dredger, and
Rebecca BRYCE. Their first two children were born in Whitstable. They
were:
Elizabeth FOREMAN (ref F50)
Walter FOREMAN (ref F51)
The 1851 census return for Whitstable shows them living at 37 Harbour
Street. The family emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1857/58. They
had five more children in Australia. They were:
Hannah FOREMAN (ref F52)
Arthur Edward FOREMAN (ref F53)
Frederick FOREMAN (ref F54)
Fanny FOREMAN (ref F55)
Ellen FOREMAN (ref F56)
In the 1899 Electoral Roll for Carlton, Victoria, Walter is referred
to as a "gentleman" of 134 Barkly Street. Elizabeth died in Carlton in
1907, and Walter died there on 25th April 1913, at the age of 88.
Walter's will was dated and signed on 20th May 1909. He appointed his
son, Walter, and his son-in-law, George Alfred STEPHENS (Elizabeth's
husband) as executors and trustees. He left "all his household
furniture (including Piano and Harmonium)...to my four children namely,
my married daughter Mrs Elizabeth STEPHENS, Walter FOREMAN, my married
daughter Mrs Ellen Durston and Arthur Edward FOREMAN in equal shares."
He left Elizabeth his freehold property "consisting of two houses Nos.
134 and 146 Barkly Street Carlton...and Six hundred pounds". He left
Walter a block of land in the parish of Jeetho "containing about 243
acres 16 perches with all buildings and improvements thereon....And I
forgive my said son Walter FOREMAN all monies in which he is at the date
of this my Will indebted to me." He left Ellen a block of land in the
parish of Jeetho "containing 147 acres 1 rood 29 perches...and a legacy
of A3 300". He bequeathed to his son Arthur another block of land in
the parish of Jeetho "containing 231 acres 1 rood 20 perches...and a
legacy of A3 200." he left the residue of his estate to the executors
to sell to pay off his debts, Mortgage etc..any shortfall to be borne
equally by the four children. The will was proven in the Supreme Court
of Victoria on 12th June 1913. The Statement of Inventory valued
Walter's assets at A3 11,290...which at today's values (1994) would
equate to around A36,000,000!

was buried in Whitstable churchyard.
E18 WILLIAM WHITE FOREMAN (D12) - was born on 11th March 1825 and was
baptised on 17th April 1825 at Whitstable Parish Church. In adult life
he was a ship-owner, an innkeeper (of "The Duke of Cumberland", with his
mother, Johanna) and a ships' chandler. Wallace HARVEY's book "The
merchant Ships of Whitstable" carries a photograph of William White
FOREMAN on page 277. William was owner of the "ANENOME" and the "ISIS",
and part owner of the "ANNE" (ex "JOHANNES"), the "CAUTIOUS", the
"GREENWICH", the "HILDA", the "IMPETUOUS" and the "RECKLESS".
The "ANENOME" was built in 1857 in north Scotland by Miller. She was a
170 ton brigantine and was wrecked in a storm in 1868.
The "ISIS" was built at Sunderland in 1843. She was a 126 ton
brigantine, registration number 24791, bought by William White FOREMAN
on 12th September 1872. She was wrecked off Havre on 31st August 1876.
The "ANNE " (ex "Johannes") was a 119 ton brigantine, registration
number 23846, owned by William White FOREMAN (Innkeeper), William
FOREMAN (Butcher), John B. FOREMAN, and John Goldfinch jnr., on 20th
September 1854. Her masters are given as John Bloomfield FOREMAN (20th
September 1854) and Gaskin (1873). This vessel was captured as a prize
in the Crimea War in 1854 and was then named "Johannes". She was bought
for local use on 31st August 1854.
The "CAUTIOUS" was built in Rye by Hoad Brothers in 1854. She was a
138 ton schooner, registration number 17323, owned by William White
FOREMAN, Walter Kitchingham FOREMAN, and John Goldfinch (13th July
1859). Her masters are shown as Cooper, C. Merritt, and Parker. She
was bought from Rye on 12th July 1859 and insured for A3 450. Mainly
used in the coal trade, on the 12th July 1893 she was in Ramsgate
Harbour when her cargo was found to be on fire. The crew fought the
fire "with great heroism", one of them losing his life. Great damage
was suffered, but the hulk was saved, towed to Whitstable, drawn up on
the slipway, and practically rebuilt. She went back to the coal trade
for another ten years. On 1st August 1903, when she was six miles E. of
N. near Sandhead, Kent, with coal from Sunderland for Ramsgate, she
sprang a leak. With careful sailing she made port, where she was
unloaded, and then condemned. In April 1904, however, she was converted
into a hulk.
The "GREENWICH" was a 214 ton brigantine built at Rye in 1850,
registration number 12719. William White FOREMAN owned her jointly with
George Albert Cox (7th August 1901). She was originally bought20
from London on 13th March 1867. She was insured by George Cox on 14th
October 1875 for A3 400. She had an odd habit of suddenly leaking
badly, requiring much effort to bale her out, then she would go a long
time with no leaks at all. In a gale on 29th November 1897 she
stranded on the Gunfleet Sand and was given up for lost. After a while
her hulk was floated off and she was towed into Lowestoft. Repaired and
refitted she continued in the coal trade until 17th March 1907. Then
she was 22 miles N.E. of Flamborough Head bound from Newcastle to Exeter
carrying coal, pig iron, and lead, when she foundered in a W.S.W. gale
force 9. The crew of seven were saved.
The "HILDA" was a 223 ton barquentine, registration number 81405, built
by Pickard in 1879 at Appledore, Devon. She was owned by the Whitstable
Shipping Company, T.R. DADD, E. FOREMAN, T. DADD Sen., William White
FOREMAN, William FOREMAN, D. HORLOCK, F.C. ASHBY and W.E. SAMPSON (15th
February 1898). She was sunk in a collision off Nova Scotia on 9th
December 1900.
The "IMPETUOUS" was originally built as a snow by Hoad Brothers at Rye.
She was converted to a brig in 1860, then a brigantine in 1864. She
weighed 163 tons and her registration number was 19009. She was owned
by William White FOREMAN and Thomas Wood MINTER, and was registered at
Whitstable. She was insured for A3 920. She was sold to Guernsey.20
The "RECKLESS" was a 149 ton schooner built at Rye in 1857. She was
owned by George Albert Cox, William White FOREMAN and William H. Randall
(8th January 1859). She was wrecked off Cleethorpes in 1880.

William PAUL deserted her, and some time later, believing he had
drowned, Grace started work as a barmaid. She was then engaged by a wealthy
family as a housemaid, and after joining them on a trip to Russia, she
continued this line of work on a sailing ship for the next three years,
travelling to various ports across the globe. Struck down by rheumatic fever,
she had to leave a boat in New Zealand in 1876. In 1878 she sailed to
Melbourne. Grace decided to fetch her two surviving children and some gold she
had left in Scotland. Dr FETHERSTONHAUGH joined her on the voyage, and again
paid part of her fare.. On their return Grace again met up with Henry MOSS, who
helped her buy the Central Hotel in St Kilda (not surprising that she entered
the hotel trade, considering her father was a publican). The venture failed,
partly due to Grace caring for her son who was dying of consumption.
Shortly afterwards the SOMNERS bought Beaconsfield House. It turned out that
Grace's husband William PAUL was still alive after all, and he visited
Melbourne for a while. Grace allowed her daughter Priscilla to meet him and
chose with whom she wanted to live. She chose to stay with her mother, and Paul
returned to England where he died shortly after.
By 1887 Henry Moss insisted that Arthur and Grace get married and he paid
them 100 sovereigns for that purpose. Grace and Arthur spent some time in
England, Australia and New Zealand. Arthur for some years owned a farm in Nar
Nar Goon, selling it in 1895. In New Zealand, Grace was struck down by some
illness, they decided it was best to return to Melbourne in 1901, but Arthur
died on the voyage. Grace then moved to Ballarat, where her daughter and
grandchildren lived. Grace SOMNER died in 1907. It appears that by this time
not much of the inheritance was left, as money Grace had lent to her daughter
was unrecoverable. - First published in the Village Bell, Issue 184, June 2011.

parents and siblings to Muskoka, Canada in 1870. According to the
diaries of Emily Mary PENSON (later to be William's sister-in-law) he
was "a very nice young man, steady, and a really good living fellow. He
and Flo were an ideal couple". There he married Florence PENSON, known
as 'Flo', daughter of another pioneer family. Flo's sister Alice
married Fred Stubbs, from England, in a double wedding ceremony on 17th
May 18??. (This was Flo's mother's birthday). Emily's diary notes that
"it was a bright sunny day". The ceremony was conducted by Mr. COLE a
Church of England minister from Bracebridge. The ceremony took place in
'the old log house' which had been bedecked with wild flowers fro the
occasion. "The brides wore silver-grey dresses and white caps made of

their first "assessor". Later William married his late wife's sister,
widowed herself, Clara Ada Jane WATSON (nee PENSON), who had a daughter
of her own, Emily WATSON. William worked in the building trade, as well
as clearing and working his land. Realising the potential of Muskoka as
a tourist centre he built the original "ENDIANG HOTEL". (It was later
bought by Rupert DUKE, who renamed it "ARCADIA HOUSE". William was also
a secretary-treasurer of the old Anglican Church. Later the family moved
to Alberta, in the Lacomber area, settling in a new section. William
named that section "ENDIANG", which it is still called today. From here
his family 'scattered'. Clara died in Alberta. William lived with
'family' for some years and died on Vancouver Island. He is buried in
St. John's Churchyard, near Colwood, British Columbia.

he saw her lifting her voluminous skirt, under which a bag was suspended
on a cord. The bag was apparently full of gold sovereigns! She also

master of the "VIVID", and that she had not been heard of since. On
31st October it was reported that her boat had been picked up off
Clacton. Later it was reported that "a man, name unknown, had been
found drowned on Filiestone beach on 4th December 1891". The Filiestone

G84 KENNETT FOREMAN (F47) - was born in Canada. He died at the age of
six months "from teething". Robert SCOTT robertjscottphotography@gmail.com
wrote 2.9.2021: My name is Robert Scott and I'm a photographer from Calgary,
Alberta, Canada. I'm currently working on a book and documentary about many
of the abandoned houses in Alberta.
I've recently been researching an abandoned house in the Red Willow area of
Alberta. Alan KROMM grew up in the house and told me that before he lived
there it was a post office. A little digging led me to Frank FOREMAN (F47)
who I believe homesteaded the area.
In the yard of the abandoned house (post office) are two iron crosses that
have 'FOREMAN' welded in the centre (see attached photo).

Alan led me to them. He said that his mother knew who they were and that
relatives from the US had come up about 10 years ago and placed them at the
grave sites. His mother has since passed and he can't recall the names she
told him.
Upon doing a little investigating on ancestry.com and the detailed page you
have written, I believe that one of the graves could belong to a 'Kennett
Foreman' (ref G84), who passed away at just 6 months from teething. Gordon
FOREMAN (G83) was shot and killed accidentally during a hunting trip when he
was just 14 and was the first person buried in the pioneer cemetery just up the
road. This leads me to believe that there is another descendant buried on the
property but I'm not sure who.
I'm looking for confirmation on whether or not it is Kennett buried in the
yard and who the other body may be. Alan showed me that the markers are in
fact not in front of the actual graves. There are two depressions in the
ground a few meters away. He knew the locations from when he was a boy growing
up. He led me to them and they are distinct.

G85 BERTHA FOREMAN (F47) - was born in Canada. She fell in love with

the Hanna family, in the hope that she'd get over Harold. However, she
married Harold O'LEARY anyway, on 18th August 1917 at the Presbyterian

[PJS adds: Lucy Pickering was the daughter of Nelson Pickering and Mary

married twice. His first wife was Aimee ? in 1927, whilst he was a
worker at the Penticton Bakery. He was a baker in Penticton and Kelowna
'until I got flour poisoning and had to quit that trade'. He then moved
back to Penticton, and then to Copper Mountain where he worked on the
railroad. He served with the Canadian Army during the war as a
transportation worker at Val Cartier in Quebec. After the war he
returned to Penticton to work for Penticton Pipe and Flume and for
Western Farms. He and Aimee had five children:
Irma FOREMAN (ref H73)
Merna FOREMAN (ref H74)
Lily FOREMAN (ref H75)
Ruby FOREMAN (ref H76)
Lorna FOREMAN (ref H77)
Earle and Aimee were divorced, and in August 1945 Earle went on a
'blind date' with Ruth Annie DAMON. She became his second wife on 21st
September 1945. Earle also worked on the construction crew that built
one of the famous church landmarks in Penticton. The church is built of
rock and cement! Earle suffers from diabetes and is nearly blind. He
says that the FOREMAN family has a history of diabetes and blindness,
and that many members of the family are hard of hearing. He also says

Belvedere Congregational Church, Belvedere, Kent. The service was
conducted, under licence, by Rev. H. Darvill, and was witnessed by F.T.
Ankers (bride's step-father), A. FOREMAN (bridegroom's mother) and R.U.
("Bob") FISHER, an Army friend. At the time of the wedding, Robert was
on leave from the Army (Trooper 14215290 - R.A.C. Tank Division). His
civilian occupation was given as 'baker's roundsman', and he was living
with his parents at 73 King's Highway, Plumstead. Margaret was living
at home with her mother, her step-father (Frederick Ankers) and her
brother, Frederick BARNES. They lived at 8A Holly Hill Terrace, Erith
(later to be renamed 208A Riverdale Road). Margaret was born on 4th
September 1924 at Erith, Kent, the daughter of Frederick BARNES
(deceased) and Winnie BARNES (nee CHILTON). Robert was a very good
shot, and almost became a 'sniper' in World War II. He learned to
drive whilst training with the Army, and became a tank driver. He went
to France in the summer of 1944, just after the D-Day landings, and was
involved in a major tank battle just outside the city of Caen, in
Northern France. It was while his tank was "resting up" that it took
two direct hits from enemy shells and the heavy front armour-plating
collapsed. Seriously injured, and bleeding badly, he twisted some wire
around his legs to act as tourniquets. He was dragged out alive, to be
flown back to hospital. His wounds were so severe that the surgeons had
no option but to amputate, as gangrene had set in. His right leg was
amputated through the knee-cap, and the left leg almost at the thigh.
Always a very cheerful man, he pulled through, with help from his wife
of six months and his close relatives and friends. He was on the
'critical' list at the hospital for two weeks. He was just 21 years
old. There was very little chance of his pursuing his pre-war training
as a master butcher, and he got a job at an electrical factory in Erith,
Kent, which made chokes and transformers for electrical lighting units.
Lack of exercise due to his physical disabilities meant that he put on
weight. At one stage he weighed 21 stones, had a 54" chest and a 56"
waist, with a 21" neck. He was very strong, as he had to use his arms
to 'propel' and lift himself. He could easily bend pokers and crowbars,
and he once lifted up the front end of his car, from a seated position
on the ground! Robert and Margaret had two children:-

Bursted Woods Maternity Hospital, Barnehurst, Kent, the younger of
identical twins. he was baptised on 21st January 1951 at Belvedere
Congregational Church, Upper Belvedere, Kent. In adult life he was a
computer operator, a qualified accountant (Chartered Institute of Public
Finance and Accountancy), an auditor, then a computer audit consultant
with the Woolwich Building Society. He married Janet LAWRENCE on 5th
July 1975 at St. Andrew's Church, Bostall Heath, Kent. The marriage
ceremony was conducted by Rev. John Martin CLEAVER, and was witnessed by
Margaret FOREMAN (bridegroom's mother) and Brian Lawrence (bride's
brother). Roger FOREMAN (bridegroom's brother) was 'best man'. Janet
was born on 19th November 1955 at Erith, Kent, the daughter of Ronald
Edwin LAWRENCE and Jeanne LAWRENCE (nee GODDEN). At the time of the
marriage Alan was living at 9 Barry Avenue, Bexleyheath with his mother
and brother, and Janet was at 303 Gipsy Road, Welling, living with her
parents and brother. After marrying they set up home at 115 Colyers
Lane, Northumberland Heath, Kent, and in 1986 moved to 46 The Old Yews,
New Barn, Longfield, Kent. They have 2 children:- names withheld pending permission
James Richard FOREMAN (ref J21)
Thomas Alexander FOREMAN (ref J22)
Alan is a member of the Kent Family History Society, and of the
Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, based in Canterbury,
Kent. He is also a member of the Royal Society for the Protection of
Birds, and the Royal Lifeboat Institute, for whom he raises funds by
collecting postage stamps. In October 1994 Alan was voted in as a
Parent Governor of the new Langafel Church of England County Primary
School in Longfield, Kent - for a term of office of four years. His
other 'claim to fame' is that from the period 1986 to 1991 he featured
in the Guinness Book of Records (under the "Literature" section) as
being the writer of the world's longest personal letter, written to Jan,
of course. It took him 2 years to write, and had to go via the Royal
Mail system to qualify as a letter (and it had to be hand-written). Jan
and Alan featured on a Guinness Book of Records spectacular in Tokyo,
Japan in 1986, (along with the then world's fattest man, and the world's
tallest man) and also appeared on Central Television (in the U.K.) as
well as Alan making an 'appearance' on local (Kent) radio. The record
was never beaten, but the compilers of the book 'rationalised' the entry
coverage in 1991 and the record no longer appears. On 29th September
1995 they moved within the village, to 12 Ridgewood, New Barn, a new
house built by Linden HOMES. In August 1996, Alan sat and passed the
Certified Information Systems Auditor examination, with a pass of 83%.
In November of 1996, Alan was elected onto the Board of Directors of the
newly-formed New Barn Management Company Ltd, looking after the one acre
of shared woodland forming part of the Ridgewood development. He also
became the Treasurer, but this soon changed, when he changed roles to
take up the position of Company Secretary, following the resignation of
the former Secretary. Alan also took on the role of Neighbourhood Watch
Deputy Co-ordinator for Ridgewood in January 1997. In mid 1997, Alan was
elected onto the Parochial Church Council for St. Mary Magdalene,
Longfield, and in the autumn joined the choir (along with son James).
Keen on ten-pin bowling, Alan joined the Woolwich bowling league and in
1997 became Captain of "The Lucky Strikes" team. In early 1998, Alan
was also named an 'Honorary Secretary' to the Missions for Seamen, a
charitable organisation which helps seafarers throughout the world, at
over 300 missions in ports. Alan is the author of this pedigree.
Jan worked initially as a shop assistant at Boots the Chemist in
Welling High Street, then for William Nash the papermaker at St Mary's
Cray, followed by a spell at the Metropolitan Police, and at Bromley
Council. She finally gave up full-time employment following the birth of
Thomas, but she continued to be actively involved with assisting in
classes at their school (Langafel Church of England County Primary
School, in Longfield). She also worked for friends and neighbours doing
gardening work, a topic she is very fond of. She became involved with
the Longfield Hill Fellowship Church and became baptised in 1997, at a
very moving ceremony in their founder church at Wilmington.
