p15: Conquest is named after Alfred's victory over the Danes.
He was king of all the lands of Lydeard. He gave its manor, now Bishop's
Lydeard, with those of Wellington & West Buckland, to Asser, prelate. In 1643
Roman coins were found near Taunton Castle. p17: Taunton in Saxon times.
The West Saxon king Ina built a castle here in 700, rebuilt 722. He made the
1st code of laws. Succeded by Ceadwalla in Wessex, son of Cenred nephew of
Cynegils. Ina m Ethelburgh. Ina's law: Peter-pence: if a West Saxon owned 20P
he paid 1d p.a. for the Church of Rome. p20 Ina's 2nd law: a penalty for a bp
after 30 days. Ina was ancestor of Ethelred 2 m Emma. The Anglo-Saxons kept
& sold many slaves especially in Northumbria where even 'their nearest
relations' were enslaved, til some time after 1066. p21 St Wulfstan, bishop
of Worcestor d 1095 ended the slave market in Bristol where he saw '... rows
of young people of both sexes tied together with ropes; of great beauty in
the flower of their younth, daily prostitued, daily sold.'

genealogies of HILL, BONVILLE, GREY, FITZWARINE, BOURCHIER, MORE, YEA.
